Dr.Sheth’s Neem & BHA Serum Review

Confused about whether this new Dr.Sheth’s Neem & BHA serum is for your skin? Then you have come to the expert! kidding I am no expert especially when it comes to BHA since before using Dr.Sheth’s BHA serum I wasn’t even a regular BHA user. This serum changed my perspective when it comes to BHA serum.

I have dry skin so most BHA serums scare me since they tend to dry out your skin more. Well, this one from Dr.Sheth’s doesn’t. Instead, it helps me with my stubborn irritating blackheads. First, let’s talk about what the brand says about the product then we will get to my experience and how I recommend using this.

But before that, if you don’t know much about BHA and what it does then check out my other post on all about AHA & BHA: Click here

Product Description:

  • Acne-prone skin! When bacteria, debris, sebum, and dead skin cells mix together, they create a dangerous cocktail: Clogged pores.
  • With our weather conditions, Indian skin is more likely to suffer from acne and clogged pores, and blackheads
  • We’ve formulated our Neem & BHA Spot Clarifying Serum with 2% Salicylic acid and anti-bacterial Neem oil (holy grail ingredients for those with oily, acne-prone skin).
  • Salicylic acid, a B.H.A. (Beta Hydroxy Acid) is oil-soluble acid, which goes deep in your pores and dissolves the oil and dirt trapped in your pores, and helps you get the clear skin of your dreams.
Ingredients:

2% Salicylic acid (BHA) (exfoliant) | Neem oil (anti-bacterial) | Tea Tree oil (anti-acne) | Niacinamide (brightening, anti-redness) | Green Tea extract (conditioning, calming) | Wheat and Oat sugars (hydration – gluten free) | Allantoin (healing) | Lavender Oil (calming) | Glycerin (humectant) | Propylene Glycol (humectant, penetration enhancer) | Polyacrylate crosspolymer – 6 (co-gelling agent) | Acacia senegal gum (gelling agent) | Xanthan gum (gelling agent) | Disodium EDTA (heavy metal remover) | Sodium Hydroxide (pH adjuster) | Polysorbate 20 (emulsifier) | Phenoxyethanol (preservative) | Double distilled and demineralized water

Instruction For Use

This versatile serum can be incorporated into your anti-acne routine in two ways!
1.As a mask

  • With clean hands, rub a few pumps of the clarifying serum on your palms till the neem and tea tree oil pearls burst and activate.
  • Apply an even layer of gel on your face. Leave it on for 5-10 mins.
  • Wash off with a mild cleanser.
  • This can be done 2-3 times a week.

2.As a spot treatment overnight :

  • Whenever you spot a pesky pimple or blackhead making an unwanted appearance on your skin, apply a bit of the serum on it.
  • Leave overnight and wash off the next morning!
  • Apply an even layer of gel on your face. Leave it on for 5-10 mins.
  • Derm tip: It can also be mixed with Our Basic Brightening Extra Gentle Daily Peel for a deeper exfoliation or our Rosehip and Retinoid Power Emulsion for a more targeted approach to zap away acne.
  • And don’t forget to slather on sunscreen! ALL BHAs make Indian skin more susceptible to UV and pollution and we must be sure to apply a generous layer of SPF to keep our skin protected.

Packaging:

Pretty standard pump packaging. The outer overall look is Dr.Sheth’s trademark packaging. I don’t really mind the pump, since I don’t have issues while using it. Just keep a watch on the pressure you apply to the pump. It’s a glass bottle but not heavy so it is travel-friendly.

Formula and its Texture:

It’s a gel-based formula. Not too thick nor runny. More like aloe vera gel consistency. It has small green beads that are not plastic. They are neem capsules that dissolve when you rub it a few times on the skin or between your fingers. Sometimes I get left with green dots on my face but they kind of disappear in a while. It has no scent whatsoever. Even if you put your nose in it. The gel texture makes it super easy to use.

My Experience:

I never had crazy acne issues which I am very thankful for. Whenever I got acne I just reached for Tea Tree essential oil. Now before you gasp it works for me fine so I never had an issue. Usually, I would mix a drop or two with aloe gel or rose water and applied it to the acne as a spot treatment and it worked well.

I have used salicylic acid before in the form of spot treatment by Kaya and it worked well for me but I used it only when I really needed it. I also use chemical peels that have both AHA & BHA so never needed a separate BHA serum.

Till I came across this gem I never really understood the love for BHA serum. I always thought BHA is meant for you only if you have oily acne-prone skin. But the more I studied about BHA I realized it’s also for blackheads & whiteheads and it also keeps your pores clog-free. I love the fact that this one is the best of both worlds, my trusty tea tree plus the goodness of neem and power of 2% salicylic acid.

So I dedicatedly started using Dr.Sheth’s Neem & BHA serum in my routine. You can use this morning and night I just prefer using chemical-based products in my nighttime routine. I am also very lazy in the mornings.

How I like to use Dr.Sheth’s Neem & BHA Serum in my Routine:

There are a few ways you can use this serum. Let’s see those first then I will tell you my fav.

  • Use it like a 10 min mask. This works better if you are scared of chemical exfoliation. You can apply a good layer on and keep it for 5 to 10 mins depending on how tolerant your skin is towards chemical-based ingredients. I can keep this for 10 mins since my skin is used to 2% BHA but it does feel dry when I wipe it off and I need to apply a nice layer of moisturizer (usually something that has Hyaluronic acid and/or ceramide)
  • Apply a very thin layer all over the face. This method is better if you are prone to acne all the time. But no matter your skin type follow it up with an HA-based sleeping mask.
  • If your skin barrier is weak or if you are new to BHA serum then mix this BHA serum with a Ceramide moisturizer it will act as a buffer. I used the Pure by Priyanka Aloe moisture surge the first week of using this serum.
  • The most common and my fav way to use it is as a spot treatment. Apply the serum on parts that need attention. For me its the nose & chin area which is filled with blackheads and whiteheads. I also apply this on the acne popping up and around my nose where my pores are bigger and tend to get clogged easily. This way you can use it more often.

I prefer using BHA serum 3 times a week. For the weeks I have used physical exfoliation or something stronger with a high % of chemical exfoliation I will avoid using this. I do not mix this with Vitamin C and AHA serum. Also, I don’t use this serum if I have used a face cleanser or toner that has AHA in any form. I always follow it up with a moisturizer/sleeping mask. Sunscreen the next day is very important so please don’t skip it.

Does it work with other Dr.Sheth products?

  • It does work well with other products, especially with their chemical peel. You can mix them and use them as a quick 10 mins mask. This combination is great for sensitive skin who can’t tolerate a high % of AHA and BHA.
  • The best Jodi is the serum followed by their Haldi & HA sleeping mask. Bha can be used in the daytime too so you can use this same combo in the day too or use another moisturizer on top.
  • If you have a weak skin barrier you can follow this serum with their Cica & Ceramide serum.
  • If you have terrible acne mix it with the retinoid emulsion. But do this only 2 to 3 times a week otherwise it can become too much. (only at night)

Has the serum worked for me and in what way?

I see a huge difference when it comes to my stubborn blackheads especially on my nose. So I always use nose strips (once a week) but after using this BHA serum I use a nose strip once in 20 days and my nose doesn’t look bad. It has also reduced 40% of whiteheads on my chin but still a few ways to go on that. Those are stubborn since they are hormonal.
In terms of acne, I don’t worry anymore. I just use this on the acne that’s trying to come out and it disappears or doesn’t come out. It really dries out the acne super quickly.  This serum did not cause any purging or sensitivity on my skin (since I am already used to the ingredients)

Overall I love it and definitely recommend it.

Caution: Don’t overuse it especially with other chemical and active ingredients. My skin doesn’t tingle since I am used to the ingredients and it’s % but if you are new it will tingle at first so go slow. Never skip sunscreen.

Why you should buy Dr.Sheth’s Neem & BHA Serum?

  • It’s one of the best BHA formulae in the Indian market (okay sorry I do sound biased here)
  • One of the mildest formula that even works for sensitive skin
  • Has no fragrance
  • An amazing solution to acne problems especially as a spot treatment
  • Works really well on stubborn blackheads and whiteheads
  • This one can be mixed with their in-house chemical peel & retinoid
  • Works as a serum and a quick mask
  • It’s economical since one bottle lasts a good period of time

Why you shouldn’t buy Dr.Sheth’s Neem & BHA Serum?

  • You don’t get acne or if you do it is very rare and mild which goes away easily
  • Already love using chemical peels that have both AHA & BHA
  • More of a physical exfoliation person
  • Extra sensitive skin especially towards chemical ingredients
  • You already are using a BHA serum which you love
  • If you are allergic to neem or essential oils

My Ratings: 💚💚💚💚💚/5

I know I said this after using the Retinoid power emulsion that it’s their best formulation to date but can I say the same for this one too? Because I really can’t choose.
