Hyaluronic Acid Is all the rage right now in the skincare community and not just skincare it’s being used in makeup too. This ingredient was first targeted towards dry skin but it soon became famous with all skin types since it can be used by oily acne-prone skin too. Hyaluronic acid is incredibly gentle and helpful for all skin types, even the most sensitive, redness-prone skin. In fact, its positive influence on the skin’s surface is due in part to its natural calming benefit, which means it is also suitable for breakout-prone skin, but understanding what the ingredient does is super important. So I’ll cover up all the benefits this ingredient has and how to use it. I will also add in recommendations of the products I have used so check that out.
What is Hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally present in the human body. It is found in the highest concentrations in fluids in the eyes and joints. It is also used in medicine form but here we are talking in skincare terms. Mostly products that have hyaluronic feel lightweight on the skin and are usually water-based or gel-based. It depends on what other ingredients are mixed with it. The most famous forms are serums and sleeping mask but a lot of brands have started adding this ingredient in foundations and blushes & bronzers since it gives a more plump and hydrated look. The fresh radiant look is really in and hyaluronic acid really helps in that area.
What does Hyaluronic acid do for your skin?
Hyaluronic Acid helps reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles retaining moisture to the skin, creating a plumping effect. When the skin is protected and hydrated, increased skin cell production can take place, as the skin isn’t busy fighting for hydration. This leads to smoother, plumper skin cells. Hyaluronic a humectant. That means that it draws moisture towards it and holds onto it so that the skin can absorb it.
How to use Hyaluronic acid?
Like any other ingredient start with applying once a day and see how your skin reacts to it when you see there is a difference in hydration then start applying it twice a day.
If your skin is particularly dry you can apply it to damp skin and apply your usual moisturizer after. If you’re applying hyaluronic acid to a very dry face, it can actually end up drawing moisture from the deeper levels of your skin, which in turn will cause more harm than good and leave your complexion feeling tight and uncomfortable.
Layering hyaluronic acid:
Layering with hyaluronic acid products is super important. So if you are using a serum always use a toner before it and see that the toner hasn’t fully absorbed and your skin is still damp and always follow it up with a moisturizer. Now if the last step product has hyaluronic acid which can be a sleeping mask or a moisturizer those usually have other ingredients in it which help with moisturizing so its okay if you don’t apply another product on top. Just see that you don’t apply any product that has hyaluronic acid on dry skin and it will work fine.
A lot of times I get concerns and complaints from you guys that a certain hyaluronic acid serum didn’t work for them or that it didn’t hydrate at all. Most of the time this happens since we apply serums on dry skin which you shouldn’t and also sometimes some particular product just doesn’t work for some skin. How long it takes to see results?
You will need to give it four to six weeks before seeing definite results. However, like moisturizers, they also often contain ingredients that let you see some immediate benefit. Like for example the ones that have vitamin C in it, will obviously work better compared to plain hyaluronic acid serum for the glow.
Also, the hyaluronic acid product combines really well when it comes to other skincare acids. Especially retinoid. If you are someone who loves using retinoid you know your skin can get extra dry so following it up with a nice cream/ moisturizer which has hyaluronic acid can really help with balancing your skin hydration level. Also, a lot of times Vitamin C is mixed with a small dose of hyaluronic acid since it helps to stabilize the product and helps with inflammation that can be caused by using vitamin C on sensitive skin. The same way it works great with AHA and BHA but just always remember to apply the hyaluronic acid product on damp skin and not dry skin.
Almost all products have hyaluronic acid now either in small dosages or being the main ingredients. You will even find it in foundations and blushes now. Its a great ingredient and if used consistently it will work so I am just adding a few products from each variant you can check them out. There are obviously a lot more products that have hyaluronic acid so you can use the product that works for you.
Some of the products that have Hyaluronic acid are:
I really like this serum and they even have a sleeping mask in their hydration kit. I have reviewed them both on my blog a while back you can check it out: Click here
You will get full details on how to use it and link to buy it. Just always follow this serum with a moisturizer never skip that step even if you have oily skin.
The Ordinary one has been a recent addition to my collection and the few times I have used it I have really liked it. Infact the hydration level of this one is better compared to the Dot&Key one. So if you have dry skin you would like this better. You can buy ordinary products on Cult Beauty but I prefer buying it from Crimson.Luxe on Instagram. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
I have heard good things about this serum from Mamaearth so I ended up ordering it for myself to test it out. I’m still waiting for the order to show up thanks to the national lockdown. I’ll test it out and review it in a month or so. Since this one has rosehip oil I think this will be more moisturizing because hyaluronic acid needs an added ingredient to work to its fullest capacity.

This is my fav version of the Hyaluronic acid product since its a sleeping mask and it is used as the last step in your skincare. It holds in all the moisture inside making your skin softer and plumper while you are sleeping. This one has turmeric in it and it feels amazing on the skin. I actually like this one more than the Dot & Key one.

You will find a lot of brands doing sheet masks and mostly all of them do a Hyaluronic acid variant and they are all hydrating so you can try one from any brand you like. The ones I like are from Innisfree, The face shop, Nykaa

It’s also in hair masks now. I haven’t yet tested out anything that has hyaluronic acid when it comes to hair products. If you guys have let me know I’ll check it out. There is also a really good body lotion that has hyaluronic acid. It’s from bath and body works and it is super nourishing on the skin.
