Now that we have spoken about shampoo, conditioning also post-wash styling let’s talk about pre-wash. Now I took a poll on Instagram about how many of you oil your hair at least once a week and mostly everyone replied yes but there were quite no of people who replied no. Now we all don’t get the time to oil our hair and some of us just don’t like the oiling hair part. I’m mostly guilty of that. I don’t like the feel of oil and somehow oiling just made my dandruff worst so slowly I just stopped oiling.
And my hair started showing the side effects of not oiling. I bought a bunch of different oils, used them a few times, and then completely stopped using them. My hair fall was worst but the good thing was my dandruff and itchy scalp were in control and the major reason for that was my change of shampoo. It got so bad that I had to go to a doctor and get medicine and treatments but nothing worked. That’s when my hairdresser said you should try oiling and I was like no it makes it worst and she said it is not possible to try again.
I tried again and well to be surprised it really did work. I realized the way I was applying oil was all wrong and the way I washed it was worst that’s why I was having trouble. But over the years I have come up with my own recipe of oil and I prefer using that nowadays so I don’t use a lot of market-ready oils but I have used them so I’m gonna review them for you and the DIY recipe I follow I’ll explain on Thursday in my next blog post.
In today’s post, I’ll explain the right way to oil your hair and also the alternatives that are coming up in the market. This is a long one so grab a snack or a drink
There are too many options available in the market. The new trend is Onion oil and there was a trend some time back of egg oil which I am guilty of trying and then there are the all-time fav coconut oil and castor oil. Some say to heat the oil first then there are who say don’t heat up the oil. There are a lot of conflicting ideas and ways that are either passed down to us through our mom and grandmoms or some are new innovative ways of brands trying to sell their products. The best way to decide whether the oil is meant for you or not is to see does it solve your hair problems.
Now let me tell you one thing no one oil can solve all your problems and if an oil claims to do so it’s either fraud or too good. Just like no one teacher can teach you all subjects.
✔Understanding what your hair needs are the first step. Few tips are:
- If you suffer from dandruff you need oil which is lightweight and won’t cause build up.
- If you suffer from dry scalp then you need an oil that will moisturize your scalp.
- If you suffer from hair fall you will need to buy an oil that is targeted for Hair fall.
✔The second important thing to keep in mind is that oil is meant for the scalp and not your hair length in general. You can apply oil on your hair length but the main point of oiling is to apply it on the scalp because all your problems are situated there. Problems like dandruff and hair fall and dryness root from there. That way you won’t over wash your hair while removing the oil.
✔The third important thing the oil should be washed off in one wash and max two if you need to wash it more than 2 times to completely remove it, either the oil isn’t right or you are applying too much of it. Which will cause more harm in the future.
✔The last step and very important is to see the ingredients see that your oil is natural/virgin. Oiling is something that is important and beneficial to see that it’s natural.
If you follow all the above steps you have got yourself a good hair oil. The few that I have used are mentioned below.
Kama Ayurveda Bringadi Intensive Hair Treatment Oil
This is good oil. If you want an all in one oil with no much fuss then this is it. It has good natural ingredients and conditions your hair very well. I would suggest don’t keep this for more than 1 hour and don’t apply too much. A little goes a long way. This doesn’t help much with dandruff though but people with oily scalp can use it. Try with the small bottle before investing in the big one.
Price: Rs 650/- for 100 ml and Rs 1250/- for 250 ml

Juicy Chemistry Lavender & Sage Hair Oil (Hair Fall Control & Deep Conditioning)
This is an old bottle I used this quite a while back saved the bottle for review purposes. They have recently changed the packaging of the oil and I hear the new formula is also better but I liked the old one too. Now I actually used this properly for a while. It makes your hair super soft, it’s very easy to wash off but it doesn’t help hair fall at least it didn’t work for me. This one does smell really nice though. I have heard a lot of people loving it though. The new hair scalp chili serum is something I have heard a lot about so maybe you can try that out instead. I still have to try that.

Indulekha Bringha Hair Oil
This oil my mom just bought home one day because she kept seeing advertisements for this on the TV and she wanted to know if this works. Well, this works but the catch is you have to be super consistent. You have to regularly apply this twice a week at least for 3 months to see results. Do we have that kind of patience? If yes then go for this because it’s affordable and easy to apply. But I would suggest never apply oil after a bath, Always wash off the oil however lightweight it is. This controls the hair fall moderately and hair growth is really slow to not be seen so be patient.

Eyova Hair Nutrient With Egg Oil
I got two samples of this oil one from the envy bag which is shut now and one from Fab bag a while back. I used one bottle and it was good but not the best. This doesn’t help with hair fall nor help in hair growth also doesn’t help with dandruff. All it does is make your hair soft so if your only problem is dryness then this will work for you. The smell is okay not too bad but I don’t like this oil anymore.
Price: Rs 590/- for 50 ml

Aloe Veda Virgin Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is all our fav and we all use it time and again for our hair and it does work so you can pretty much use any brand of virgin coconut oil, it doesn’t have to be this brand I just bought it a while back because it was affordable. I need to replace it. I’ll talk more about this and other carrier oils in my next blog so stay tuned.

Alternative to Hair oil:
There are a lot of options coming out in the market to replace regular oiling since we are all busy people and most of the young generation hate oiling their hair. There are a lot of serums and cremes that are available you can use instead of regular old hair oils. Now do they work or they are just something brands came up with to dupe us.
Well according to me these are good options and some of them do work but nothing can replace the whole process of oiling. So a combination of the two will work faster but just alternatives won’t give you the nourishment you need for the long term. There are a lot of serums or known as hair vitalizer which work like hair oil but are lightweight and can be used without having to worry about washing them off. Now the question is whether you need them. You can use them if you suffer from a lot of hair problems, if you don’t then you don’t need to invest in the new alternatives.
Now there are a lot of options available in the market, I have used a couple of them out of which some that work for me are mentioned below.
Parachute Advanced Coconut Creme Oil for Hair
I have truly loved this. In fact, I even mentioned this in my travel series where I traveled with it. This is an amazing product to use since it’s super easy and it’s very cooling on the scalp. So if you travel in the heat and you need something to cool you down this is your solution. Also if you suffer from flaky scalp and heat boils on your scalp then this really helps. It really helped my mom with these problems. Now you can’t replace your oil with this because this is not meant for hair growth and to stop hair fall even if it says so. This is great for nourishment and it softens your hair like a hair mask. This instantly makes your hair look shiny and manageable. If you have dry frizzy hair you will love this a lot also it’s very easy to wash off. But use this once a week and please don’t use this as a replacement for oiling. Also, this is not natural and it has parabens in it.

Forest Essentials Hair Vitalizer Bhringraj
This is my 2nd bottle but I don’t use this anymore. I really liked it when I had gotten it in fact finished the first bottle and got this one and suddenly it stopped working for me and caused dandruff therefore stopped using it. This is a good vitalizer, it’s lightweight and gets absorbed instantly also it doesn’t dry your scalp as most vitalizers do. This gave me a nice cooling feeling and I could see small hair growth when I was using this but I don’t know later it started causing product build-up which made my hair itchy and caused dandruff so I stopped. And I do find it expensive.

Indulgeo Essentials Luxuriant Hair Vitalizer
I’m not gonna say much about this because it’s a recent purchase and I’m still trying it out. Its lightweight smells amazing and feels cooling on the scalp. So far so good. I’ll update you guys at the end of the month and do a detailed review next month.
